Who Dat Coffee & corner kitchen, Marigny

Fifteen years on the corner of Burgundy and Spain. Cajun‑Creole breakfast and lunch — corn cakes, catfish bene, sausage gravy, gallon‑pour mimosas — served from 7 to 2 by Craig Nero and a staff that calls regulars by name.

Chapter 02 · The corner store that fed the Marigny

Fifteen years on Burgundy

Craig Nero opened Who Dat Coffee Cafe in 2010, two blocks below Esplanade in the Faubourg Marigny — the New Orleans neighborhood where the music keeps going past last call and the houses still wear shotgun trim.

The corner had been a coffee‑and‑breakfast room for years. Craig kept what worked — the pressed‑tin ceilings, the sidewalk seats, the regulars who walk over from Spain Street — and built the kitchen the neighborhood asked for: corn cakes with cheesy‑eggy sauce, catfish benedict on grits, the WhoDat Big Breakfast on Saints Sunday.

“Owner Craig is very accommodating, especially for large groups, and shares interesting stories about the cafe’s history.”

In a city where restaurants change name every three seasons, fifteen years on the same corner is a kind of trust the menu can’t print. The regulars know that. So does Gary the server, who has been calling the orders since you can remember.

Chapter 05 · Pressed‑tin ceilings, sidewalk seats

A corner that knows you

The room hasn’t been remodeled in years and that is the point. Pressed‑tin ceiling overhead. Vinyl booths in front. A counter where Craig pulls a quick espresso while the kitchen finishes a corn cake order. Regulars at the same two tables most mornings.

On the sidewalk, four small tables under the awning — the spot to sit when it’s drizzling on the Marigny and the awning catches the sound of the rain. Bring the dog. He’s welcome.

“Sitting outside in a quiet neighborhood while it was raining under the awning made the dining experience extra special.”

On Saints Sundays the room turns black‑and‑gold in spirit, even when the kitchen closes by kickoff. Saturday morning is the long line. Tuesday morning is for regulars and conversation.

What an absolute charming place tucked into the neighborhoods of New Orleans. Owner was fantastically friendly. Their special of the day was Grillades and Grits — cooked to perfection. Savory and satisfying. Wait staff was delightful and prices were very reasonable.

Great staff, wonderful service and amazing food! BEST BISCUITS in NOLA. Homemade jams, all the delicious meats, sausage gravy, luscious grits and gallon‑size mimosas in a traveler. Jk, not a full gallon.

We are in town to watch the Saints and were trying to find a locally owned spot before heading that way. I got the WhoDat big breakfast, my wife had the Bywater Benè with an iced Matcha latte — they DID NOT disappoint. Our server Gary was great. Return customers every time we are in town.
